| Goal for the first meeting is currently April 6th at 10a. There is a countdown timer on the site to help us keep track as well.

| Sounds good to me. Now we just need to recruit some players.

| I found this site via ENworld.org. I live in Mebane and am interested in getting back into some D&D or similar RPG's. I used to play a lot of 1e back in the 80's but haven't played any other editions other than a little DM'g of 4e with my son and my wife and another friend.
Keep me posted.

| Hi Russ and welcome!
Right now we're still gathering players - it looks like currently we have six (including Michelle and myself) but we're not sure if all of those are confirmed to be participating or still undecided. Six is perfect but I think we can get by on four (it really depends on the game and the group). It seems that most of the players are either newbies or old-school players who haven't played in a while, so we will all be in the same boat.
April 6th is our first meeting. We scheduled it for quite a while in the future (and there's still more than a month to go) for two reasons: our real-life schedules prevent us from starting until then; and it gave us more time to gather players. This first meeting will be a meet-and-greet, to see if we all get on, and to create characters for the kickstart game.
And not that I want to speak for Michelle, but I think we both would be willing to play D&D 4e but not run it. However, Pathfinder is similar enough that it's easy and quick to learn (it's often nicknamed D&D 3.75e, after all ) and I'm willing to run that, so if you'd rather play in a D&D-style game than run one, there's that. But on the other hand, if you ran a 4e game I know I'd be willing to give it a shot as a player.

| No problem waiting until April. My wife and I just had a baby a month ago so I'm tied up with that along with my work and school schedule. I don't mind running a game but I need some playing under my belt before I try to run a game. Like I said, it's been a while. I would be down for some Pathfinder for sure. I never played 3.5 but I found 4e easy to understand so I'm sure it will be a small learning curve. Is there a particular book for Pathfinder that I should start with?

| Don't worry, Russ; as Michelle and I are rusty we've gone out of our way to recruit rusty or totally new players, so we're not expecting anyone else to run a game for a while. I'll be running the short kickstart game (and it's been a while for me too, but I used to DM games all the time so I'm sure it will come back to me quickly) and we'll go from there, deciding as a group how next to proceed.
As for Pathfinder, you only really need the Core Rulebook. You can pick it up from between $30-$60, depending on where you shop. (I'd recommend the Atomic Empire hobby store, as that's our local place, but that's just a thought. ;)) The Pathfinder Core Rulebook is basically an expanded Player's Handbook, with a good deal of the DM's Guide thrown in (it's a big book).
Having said that, you don't really need any books at all, at least not to begin with. Michelle and I will bring our various books along so people can look through them at the meet-and-greet meeting and use them to create characters, so no worries there, and more importantly people can look through the different games to see if anything appeals.

| Groovy. I figured that would be the book to get. I am very familiar with Atomic Empire having shopped there a few times with my older son. Thanks for the info. I'll keep in touch via the forums for any updates.

| If you look at the pathfinder forum I have some links that might be of interest. You can get a decent picture of the game from the SRD posted online. Between that and the character sheets online, that will give you an idea for character creation at least. Take a look and if I find anything else of interest I'll add it on.

| I bite my lip to mention that on at least a temporary basis you can find almost anything on line... I wouldn't condone that route but with all the books for DND. and then to go and get the info for pathfinder? and any other we play... google can be your best friend. I'm going to stay off my guys for DnD and focus on getting a pathfinder, the only minis I have left are a elf Lock and a dragon... I don't know it just seemed to be all that survived but the elf was always going to be played first. With that in mind, I will try and come up with an Elf sketch by... Next Weds. but no promises.

| One of the nice things I can say about Pathfinder is that, just like DnD 3.5 it was based on, they use the open gaming license so a lot of the info is meant to be out there and they even post a lot of it on their own website. It's at least enough to get an idea with character creation and the like. Not sure why they didn't do that with DnD 4e. Anyhow, looks like they might be taking some cues from Pathfinder for DnD Next as they're doing the open testing like they did. I wonder if they'll bring back the open game license for DnD 5e or Next too.
Either way, if you don't have a mini that fits what you'd like to play, I might have something close. I've brought a few and I inherited a lot from an ex-girlfriend a long while back. Let me know.

| On a side note, I have the latest D&D Next playtest packet so if anyone is interested we could run some encounters for S&G's.

| I looked up the items needed for Pathfinder and you said dice... even then... are we talking about the five pack dye you can get on amazon... um if not then what kind, what about minis, or are those just a given for any game...

| Hi Emmy,
If by five-pack you mean a d4, d8, d10, d12, and d20, then yes. Those and the d6 are what Pathfinder (and D&D) use. And d6s are easy to find, most boardgames and family games come with them. A lot of other games these days tend to simplify by using one type of die. However, if you have at least one of each of those six die you'll be set for any game. Oh, and the d20 is probably the most important, as it's rolled the most often, so if you can only get one die, get a d20.
Is this the kind of pack you meant, Emmy? Polyhedral 7-Die Translucent Dice Set - Green It's a seven-dice pack but two of those are the d6 and the d100, which aren't really needed (as d6s are easy to get and d10s and d20s can work as d100s).
However, don't worry about dice too much. Michelle and I have plenty of dice and are happy to share.
And minis are used by some games (again Pathfinder and D&D) but not others. Again, while it's great if your mini accurately represents your character, it doesn't have to. If you play an Elf sorceress, for instance, it's okay to use a male Human barbarian mini so long as everyone knows it's yours. Minis often get proxied as one thing or another.

| I'd be interesting in the new DnD stuff Russ. I'm interested to know where they're going to go with next and all.
I wouldn't worry too much about the dice and minis to begin with Emmy. We have stuff you can use to start and if you'd like either dice or minis you can actually take a look at the game store we'll be meeting at as they have both.
I have to admit that even in games where I don't necessarily need a mini, if I play a character for a length of time, I usually end up picking one up anyhow just because I bond with the character.

| I can relate to that Michelle, pretty well. Actually the first name I had, "Magsy" was chosen from a charecter I rp with and write for... and maybe that counts as gaming but... I don't really equate it to D&D or WoW, so I didn't put it in. Anyway I do write fantasy fiction, mostly about a team of characters I've known since at least thirteen, so sometimes it's hard not to be over protective of them. Like you said, you bond to characters you create and "know" For extended period of times, they're like little children.
